Places are strictly limited so make sure to get in fast and register your place! Melbourne Workshop Pre-registration is closed. Very limited spaces may be available for the afternoon session on the day.
This workshop is designed to teach you how to make a 'yukata', or Japanese summer kimono. During this workshops, participants will be provided with a step-by-step guide which our friendly Animania Staff will lead you through, showing you in detail how to constuct your 'yukata'. A take home pattern will also be provided for you to use in later costume designs.
To facilitate a speedy workshop, the required patterns for the materials will be pre-cut for your convenience so that you can launch directly into the construction of your 'yukata'. Most of the sewing will be completed by yourself using the sewing machines provided, however there may be some sections requiring more delicate touch ups and needing to be hand sewn. If you have never sewed before - do not despair! The tutors will be on hand at all times to help and provide assistance.
WHAT IS A YUKATA?
The 'yukata' is a casual form of kimono. Typically worn during the Japanese summer, people can often be seen wearing a 'yukata' at various summer festivals and events. It is also frequently worn after bathing at traditional Japanese travel inns - indeed its original use was as a bath robe, but the 'yukata' eventually was associated more with comfort and became popular to wear to events that were not formal enough to require a full kimono. ‘Yukata’ come in a range of different fabrics and colours, but are usually unlined and made of cotton rather than the heavier silk used in formal kimonos.
