This year, Animania will be hosting several exciting ABJD events for the general public and doll owners! All doll owners are welcome to bring their dolls to Animania and display them on a table for free (Rules and Guidelines for this will be available shortly). We have some exciting prizes in store for the winners of our competitions, including dolls!
Asian Ball Jointed Dolls (ABJDs) are resin dolls that are mostly made in Japan and Korea. These dolls have ball and socket joints at their necks, shoulders, elbows, wrists, torsos, hips, knees and ankles. Several companies are now producing dolls with joints at their fingers and toes too. These separate components are strung together with elastic cords and hooks on the inside of the body to produce a complete doll. With the ball joints and elastic tension holding the parts together, the ball-jointed dolls are fully poseable. ABJDs are sculpted and hand cast rather than mass produced. Most companies only cast and produce the doll when an order is placed.
A major attraction of ABJDs is that they are customizable. Their wigs and eyes are easily changeable. Any part of the body can be removed and replaced as long as the fit is right. Many paint their doll's face and body as well. Several owners take customisation a step further by sanding away or modifying to add to existing parts of the doll and producing an aesthetic that they like.
