ARTspace

The Animania Festival Weekend ARTspace is dedicated to a range of art activities and showcasing the creations of budding young artists entering the Doodling Art Competition.

Animania Festival is also privileged as always to support the doujinshi community in Australia. Loosely translated as "amateur work", doujinshi refers to the artwork created by fans of manga and is an important aspect of the anime culture. A range of local professional and amateur artists at the Festival showcasing their artworks, make sure to swing by the community art stalls to see these often inspiring artworks and maybe take home a souvenir!

The ARTspace will be home to the following events:

Asian Ball Jointed Dolls Showcase

Animania Festival Weekend will feature a display table where doll owners will be showcasing their Asian Ball Jointed Dolls.

Check out the ABJD table in the Cosplay Exhibition area if you own a doll yourself or are just plain curious about them!  All doll owners are welcome to bring their ABJDs to join the display set-up. More information to come!

What are ABJDs?

Asian Ball Jointed Dolls (ABJDs) are resin dolls originating from Japan, though modern dolls are now predominately made in Japan and Korea. These dolls have ball and socket joints at their necks, shoulders, elbows, wrists, torsos, hips, knees and ankles. Elastic cords are fed through each of these components, through the inside of the body and then strung together to produce a complete doll. With their ball joints and the elastic tension of their stringing, the ball-jointed dolls are fully poseable. ABJDs are sculpted and hand cast rather than mass produced.

A major attraction of ABJDs is that they are highly customisable, the most basic customisation being their easily changeable wigs and eyes. Many owners paint their own doll's face and body while others take customisation a step further by sanding away, modifying and adding to existing parts of the doll to produce a more unique aesthetic.

For more information, head on over to Den of Angels, where many doll owners from around the world come together as a community and exchange information on ABJDs. The local ABJD forum is The Faireground where you can find out more about ABJD affairs in Australia and befriend the local crowd!

Also exciting news for people attending, one of our sponsors are giving company points to all Sydney Animania Attendees!!!

Craft Workshops

There will be a range of small workshops held in the ARTspace. Our friendly Animania Staff will guide you through all the techniques to create your very own Japanese Paper Doll, how to make your own mobile phone accessories and also how to improve your origami skills.

Places for each of these workshops will be limited, and some may require a small contribution to cover materials. The workshop schedule will be made available closer to date.

Japanese Paper Doll Workshop

Take your origami skills one step further in this workshop and learn to create your very own Japanese paper doll! Often featured on bookmarks, these cute origami dolls are a unique way of turning a simple piece of paper into a fun and decorative piece of art!

A small fee of $2 will cover all the materials needed to create your very own paper doll to take home, including decorative papers, cardboard and glue. Places will be limited. The workshop schedule will be made available closer to date.

Origami Workshop

Literally meaning “folding paper”, origami is the art of paper folding, where through the use of various geometric folds and crease patterns one is able to create any shape or object just using paper! From simple paper cranes and boats to complex inflatable boxes and moving animals, origami can be a fun and intricate hobby for all ages.

Our friendly Animania Staff will guide you through all the techniques, simple and complex, to create a variety of shapes and objects that once completed you can take with you as a souvenir of your accomplishment! Places will be limited. The workshop schedule will be made available closer to date.

Papercraft Workshop

Popular in Japan and Europe, this hobby combines origami and paper-based modelling (scale models). All the parts for any particular papercraft model can be printed or drawn to be cut, folded, glue, and put altogether to building anything from a traditional Japanese doll to a miniature Gundam! Nothing is impossible to create in the world of papercraft!

Take home your very own Japanese carp, panda or other unique papercraft model from Animania Weekend's ARTspace! A range of pre-printed patterns and kits (simple and advanced) will be available to put together during this workshop. Visitors will be welcome to join in at their own pace or be guided by Animania Staff.

KIMONO [ 着物 ]
Garment typical of Japanese costume, made as loose, wide-sleeved robe, fastened around waist with broad sash. Kimono means a garment and is used by non-Japanese to refer generically to the many different forms of traditional Japanese dress. Ki comes from kiru, which means "to wear", and mono means "thing".

YUKATA [ 浴衣 ]
The yukata is a Japanese summer kimono, usually made from cotton and often worn during Summer festivals and events. It is also frequently worn after bathing at traditional Japanese inns.
